Blog Post #5: Casting, Progress, and Artist Research

Casting Portfolio

My sand block for the recent aluminum poor. I have done the silicoln, clay, alginate, and composimold as practice for my final project.

My experience with casting has been excellent so far. I have tried about almost everything taught in class besides using resin and hot wax. I have taken to using plaster and clay to create multiple fingers of mine. This has been the most successful and time efficient for me and my idea for my final project in sculpture. Not only do the fingers not break while trying to take them out of the clay but they as well still hold and capture the details of my fingers.

Progress on Multiply This

My inspiration for my multiply this project started with the idea of identity and my fingerprint. Then from this thought, I thought of a green thumb and the grass is greener on the other side. Finally from these thoughts all collected and being shown the work of Beili Lui, I came up with the idea of the borders and how they are percieved. I do draw a lot of inspiration from current events and societal problems, so this concept falls inline with my typical subject matter.

For this project I have predominately worked with plaster and clay. I have found this combination most successful and is saving me time.

During my process of this project, I have been working with different combinations of plaster to water and how extra water will affect the final result of a finger. I have had a few fingers turn out wet and not formed compeletly. Even though they are not perfect they are still usable given the idea of my project.

Also during this process, what I plan to continue to use and learned is that I will use the clay to make multiple molds at one time while also using my two silicoln molds. When working in class, I am able to make more than a handful of fingers just from the clay molds and I can only make two out of the silicoln.

These are my notes and sketched out ideas from the beginning of this project.

This finger is the first plaster finger I made for this project with alginate.

It then was used to help create my first composimold.

Around this finger are the many other fingers I have created since then.

Artist Research

Jill Bedgood

  • Jill Bedgood is mixed media artists that work in the realm of sculpture and instillations. She is a Texas based artist; she has a BFA in art history and painting, and a MFA in mixed media.

  • I chose Jill Bedgood because of her connection with human interaction and the connections we make with each other every day. I find that fascinating as well because I am very interested in individuals and their narratives. I feel as though we connect in the way of wanting to know other individuals stories and what their narrative is.

  • Jill Bedgood work connects to my Multiply This project because her past work involves casting and having a multitude of one specific object being made. She also works with variations in her work and that conncects to the variation of fingers I am using, their color, position, if they are broken or not, and what do they stand for.

  • Beili Liu is a visual artist who was born in China but now resides in Austin, Texas. Her work consists of installations; in which some require a performance aspect and the audience has an engagement with both the piece and the artist herself. Her work has lead her to featured in multiple publications, have a multitude of artists residences, and fortunately be awarded a numerous amount of grants.

  • I chose Beili Liu as an artist to research because her work and their meaning aline with the ideals and beliefs I have. She has passion and drive to show the audience society's issues that are still taking place even if we have forgotten them. I also really enjoy her performance aspect of the installations and how she further draws attention to a narrative.

  • I am connecting Beili Liu's work to my Multiply This project with the Each and Every instillation she did. The context of her instillation falls along the same lines as my project. I am addressing the issue of perception between our two countries and how damaging that could be.
