Blog Post #6: Final Reflection

Writer's picture: Gabriella HossGabriella Hoss

For my comparison of my first day goals I actually only accomplished one. I am now officially a member of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program. I am grateful for this opportunity to continue my education further and work more with the fantastic people that have supported me. I believe my weakness for not completing the other two goals, finding a minor I would consider to take on and working more on printmaking work, is because I had to learn time management more this semester. I soon realized balancing working four days out of the week and taking three studio classes was actually a challenge for myself.

I soon changed my goals into trying to complete assignments on time and find pride in the work I was doing. I personally felt as though I never had enough time and found this semseter quite stressful, but the work that came out of this semester is some of my best I believe. My strength for this semester and my goasl is that I put my whole all into every project and was ready to learn whatever I could. This class really did empower me and pushed my artistic ideals forward. I believe I am going towards the current moment and movement aspect of art and look forward to where this leads me.

The two artists that have been most conceptually and or aesthetically influential for me this semester would be Aurora Robson and Beili Liu. Aurora Robson has been such a conceptual and aesthetic influence to me because I adore her work and the message behind it. She takes the ugly and the forgotten and make it beautiful and vibrant; I truly admire that. I also chose Beili Liu because I feel as though our work connects conceptually and she makes me want to push my conceptual ideas further.

Seeing what women artists can do inspires me everyday and I will continue to follow these artists journeys and learn from them.

Personally I would say my least favorite exercise this semester was the wire letter. I say this because it was the letter that I had developed the least, it did not get as much attention and thought to as my wood and metal letter, and it was pushed to the back burner. I also believe I did not give it as much attention because the wood and metal projects required more technical skills that I personally required more of my attention. I believe I want to redeem myself for this project and do more research into artists that work with wire and practice more within that realm.

My favorite exercise this semester would be my wood letter. This project started it all and lead me to such great experiences, challenges, and learning to have confidence in my choices. I deem it my favorite because I started the semester off so scared of having to use tools, learning everything about everything, and possibly doing something wrong. Reflecting on where I am now, I gained such a back bone to take charge and be in the sculpture studio. I learned patience, confidence, problem solving, and so much more from this one piece. Learning to not fear from the beginning helped me all throughout this semester and I give my thanks to my wood letter. It was as well the first project once finished I realized I like making things with my hands and deciding what I need to do as my next step.

My three points of advice for future students:

  • Always come to class ready to work. Do not waste your 3 hours being there and not doing anything. I promise you there's always something that needs to be done.

  • Ask a million questions. If you are not sure where something is, how something works, what to wear for safety, and further more .... always ask before you do. Leticia will always have an answer.

  • Become engaged in your work and your peers work. This will help with your connections to your peers and it will also help you learn how to talk about your own work professionally.
