Wood Progress
At the very beginning of the wood project, I had a particular plan in mind, but upon sketching out the actual dimensions I had realized I would have had to create and cut many elongated pieces that would have required a lot of wood. To fix this problem I narrowed my measurements and created a larger height than width; this required less wood and gave me left over wood as well. After I sketched out the pieces, I came to a total of 12 pieces of different sizes. This being 6 pairs of 2 pieces that are the same dimensions. I wanted to create a size difference that would lead to stager of levels. Lastly for the beginning steps, I learned and used the band saw to create and cut my basic form.
As I continued to work on the wood letter, I faced the problem of cutting out the wood in the center to create my letter form G. For this I had to learn how to properly use a power drill, the scroll saw, and a Dremel. The power drill and Dremel were easy tools to learn and add to my tool box of knowledge, but the scroll saw required patience and practice. I began with sketching out the G, then drilled holes so that I could put the scroll saw through to be able to cut, and then began to cut the wood out. I would aslo use the Dremel to sand away some wood so the saw could cut through the wood smoothly.
I have been using quite a few tools for my wood letter. I have used the bandsaw, the scroll saw, the sander, Dremel, hand held sander, and power drill.
One of my favorite discoveries from this process was finding this beautiful red and burnt orange under the first layer of the wood. I discovered this by using the hand held sander and Dremel. I plan on sanding both sides of each piece of wood.
Lastly to finish off my plans, I need to laminate each piece together, possibly add a gloss or light stain to create a barrier to moisture, and sanding down the staggering layers so they lead to a sharper point. This last step would emphasize the shape I have been seeking the entire time; that of a crystal or gem.
Wire Progress
As I have solely focused on my wood letter form, I have not put in the time to begin the first part of the wiring process. I have sketched out a plan and made a cardboard model. I plan on cutting out the wire necessary to create the base and hammer down right angles to create a square base.
